Twisted Mix-Tape Tuesday 6

T-minus 30days 15hours 1minute and 4…3…2…

Welcome to Twisted Mix-Tape Tuesday

Where any combination of songs you think barely touch the topic are welcome, and you can play however you like. As Music Director for this lovely cruise I feel it is completely un-necessary to follow the rules as written (I dare you to find them). Mix-Tape touching the topic with a ten-foot-pole 5 songs or less. How’s that for a coconut shell?

This weeks topic: Summer Vacation (or really any summer or any vacation, or anything you want)

Our yearly migration to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, is on the horizon.
The boy wakes up every morning with the question poised on his fire-starting lips. “How many days until South Carolina now?” Yes, how many now? We begin the countdown to our month in paradise the day we head back to Chicago. It is the thing that gets us through the Chicago winters. The blah’s of February and March when you are truly questioning whether having a job is really as important as we think. Maybe living in a cardboard box in some warmer climate would be fine. We could get two and have a double wide.

What is your idea of vacation music? Got a yen for some Calypso or Reggae? Or is it some dude with his acoustic guitar sitting on a stool on a pier (that’s mine). Maybe you’ve got a Beer Margarita and a niceΒ sunburn tan. Think back…or forward. Β Maybe for you it’s just sitting by the blow-up pool in your front yard on a couple of rickety lawn chairs with a wine cooler in your hand, some Grateful Dead on the boom-box (yes I said it), yelling at your kids to stop landing on top of each other from the makeshift slide you dumped in the pool.

Whatever summer means for you. I’d love to hear.

This my friends, is the playlist aptly named Hilton Head on my iPod (minus a few)

The ride down; did I mention we drive?

Because what guy sitting on a stool on a pier doesn’t play this song?

Or this one: (btw my husband was at this concert. I was 6.)

Another travelling song.

And since you’re heading up to Carolina…(could have used this for my stalker list, but I was saving it :-))

There’s actually 17 more songs on the Hilton Head playlist, but because I am a stickler devout rule follower. I stuck to 5. I wold love to hear your lists! Post them in the comments, or if you’re really feeling it this week, create your own post and stick it in the Linky! Yea Linky, I’m keeping it open until the next weeks mix-tape, and let’s do it, let’s call next weeks topic Awesome Cover SongsΒ is there some song you’ve always loved only to realize it’s actually a cover song? The linky will come up after I give you the golden opportunity to purchase your favorite songs from my list for only $19.99. Wait, no, that’s not right. Well click and check them out at iTunes:

    • I love you so much!!!! Thanks for playing, you’re the best! Send me your email, we have the world famous Bob Chinn’s Mai Tai’s here, I’ll have them send you a case! (even though they taste like high school)

  1. Summertime for me just means that I am not freezing and finally don’t have to wear heavy coats or shovel snow. It is my favorite season by far and for some reason, I now have Fresh Prince’s Summertime!! πŸ™‚

  2. I’m longing for a trip, now! I am TERRIBLE at writing off prompts. I feel some sort of pressure and my mind goes blank. But thanks for the invitation! I’ll keep my thinking cap on…

  3. Rain in the Summertime – The Alarm
    Free Falling – Tom Petty
Just Like Paradise – Diamond Dave Lee Roth
    Cruel Summer – Banarama
Hungry Like the Wolf – Duran Duran
    Love Shack – B52s
Saturday in the Park – Chicago
    Free Energy – Free Energy
Summer of 69 – Bryan Adams
Hot Child in the City – Nick Gilder
Gonna Make You Sweat – C & C Music Factory
    Radar Love – Golden Earring
    Vacation – Go Gos

that’s off the top of my head…these songs, when I hear them, make me think of warm weather and summer.

    • Dude. For off the top of your head that’s pretty awesome. I haven’t thought about Radar Love in so long… might have to make a playlist just for your list!

  4. Man, I want to go to Hilton Head so bad. My sister regales me with tales of how absolutely beautiful and peaceful it is. I’m just pondering if a 12 hour drive with a 2yo and 1yo would be worth it. Child Dramamine maybe? did i say that out loud?
I heart you for including Brown Eyed Girl. Add Perfect Day by Hoku and Crazy Train by Ozzy and we’re golden.

    • Miss- We drive 18 hours to get there. I think It’s pretty worth it. Obviously. Did the child Dramamine thing, but it made the boy WAY MOODY. Do not want to meet that kid again. Thanks for the additions to my list! Crazy Train? Do you sit by the kiddie pool drowning out the screaming with it? LOL

  5. I am so bad at this, Jen, and you are so good. I thought of Summer Nights (from Grease – I’m a dork) and Don’t Worry Be Happy. And Touch Me by the Doors was the song we played over and over during senior week at the beach after high school graduation – so that song always makes me think of summer.

    • Dana! No one sucks at this! It’s just a thing, we all have songs that make us think of something. I just spend my whole week thinking about it! It’s funny, I have a whole album like that. The year before my senior year we listened to The Grateful Dead “Touch of Grey” album over and over and over…..I almost put that on my list, but there just wasn’t enough room!

  6. You go for a whole month? Lucky. I don’t envy the drive though. Didn’t realize you did a link up. Are we supposed to link up anything about summer? It doesn’t have to be music related, does it?

    • Hey Motha ~ Well you know…one little piece of music maybe? A song your post reminds you of?? Or not. I’m not picky at this point πŸ™‚

    • Hey LM ~ This is awesome!!! Thank you, I only know one of those songs, I can’t wait to check out the rest. I wonder what Freud would say about my music tastes being stuck in the decade of my birth?

  7. I’m not super good at this, mainly because I am utterly random when it comes to songs that remind me of summer. They don’t necessarily have anything to do with summer. Off the top of my little head, here I go:

Let It Be Me — Indigo Girls
Crooked Teeth – Death Cab for Cutie
    Scarlet Begonias – Grateful Dead
Hold My Hand — Hootie & the Blowfish
    Wonderful — India.Arie
    Pig — Dave Matthews Band
Under the Boardwalk — The Drifters
Summer in the City — Lovin’ Spoonful
Sitting on the Dock of the Bay — Otis Redding
Everything Is Everything — Lauryn Hill
Who Let the Dogs Out — Baha Men

    • Deb! I love this list!! I think I might have to add most of these to my “New Hilton Head Mix”! Thanks for playing, you’re awesome!

  8. Here I am finally! Probably the only time I’ve been late for vacation. πŸ˜‰ I need one after today. Long day and going through some favorite songs was a good way to unwind.

I didn’t see your picks until after I linked up and we both picked “Jackson”! πŸ˜‰ Great, great tune. I love the group of songs you chose; Cat Stevens, Van Morrison…takes me back.

Thanks for hosting the hop. I’m really enjoying it!

    • Linda ~ How awesome is that. I love Jackson. My 7yo son is a HUGE Johnny Cash fan, but that is his least favorite song πŸ™‚ I think it’s too sappy for him, if no one’s dying, playing with fire or going to prison, he doesn’t want to hear it! Thanks for playing, hopping over your way now!

  9. I think like lots of us, I am blanking on some. But I def have some good ones…

I Kissed a Girl- Katy Perry (I think cause it was on someone’s playlist for boating one year. Also I wanted to get the embarassing one out of the way!)

Deliverance- Bubba Sparx (reminds me of my sister, that is all)

Ice Ice Baby- Vanilla Ice (as a kid we would sing this ALL day at our Summer house in Tahoe. Now if I hear it, it’s stuck in my head for DAYS)

Peaches & Cream- 112 (I would listen to this in my ’92 acura integra while ditching class in high school)

    I’m on a Boat- The Lonely Island (Duh… I’m on a mutha f*&king BOAT!)

Ok, now I am craving a Bud Light Lime and the bikini that used to fit. Crap.

    • Hey Miss Nanny! Thanks so much for playing! I love your list, two are new to me so i’m gonna youtube them now πŸ™‚ AND thanks for the Ice Ice baby. Remind me to NEVER let you forget the day you stuck that in my head!

  10. Ahhhhhhh, Brown Eyed Girl and Steal My Kisses. GREAT picks!! I always loved the one–I don’t even remember who it’s by or what it’s called (I’m sure I’m breaking a couple of rules here by not knowing the artist OR the song title), but I’m sure you’ll recognize it when I “sing” it for you:

    “Turn the radio up
    for that sweet song
hold me close never let me go
    keep this feeling alive
    make me lose contro-ol”

Okay, I’m thinking it might be called Lose Control? It was from way back in the 80’s, and it will always be my favorite summer song–well, besides MmBop, of course. But MmBop’s number one for everything. πŸ™‚

    • I think MmBop is definitely a summer song. And you know, there’s this thing called google, and if you type in the lyrics you get “Lose Control” by Eric Carmen πŸ™‚
I love when you play Shay! No rules, just songs πŸ™‚

  11. I love your selections! Road trip mixes are my absolute favorite; I may have to stop reading your blog until after your trip- I am getting too itchy for my own vacation! (Just kidding. I won’t stop reading it. But I am DYING to go on vacation.) Just reading your posts about your upcoming vacation make me start smelling sunscreen. And margaritas.

    • mmmmmmmmm……I do admit I have a countdown app on my phone. But I think the posts are over, until I start posting from there, then you’re in BIG TROUBLE!

  12. Following from Smile With Us on Monday at The Seaman Mom blog.

Our family outing this summer probably has in it a road trip from Kentucky to Texas to visit the in-laws. I envision many more stops this trip as we will have not only the five humans and one dog, but three of her nearly-grown pups. The music score would probably include: “Beer for My Horses”, “Highway to Hell” and “In the Air Tonight”.

My dream solo get-away-from-it-all would be a mixture of non-specific island music and bagpipes. *LOL* Go figure.

    • LuAnn that’s pretty hysterical! Bagpipes and island music? Like steel drums? Maybe we’re missing something! Maybe it’s a new sound!
