I fear I might start to bore you with this intro thing. So I’m not repeating it. If you want to know why I do Twisted Mix-Tape Tuesday you can read about it here. The short version is; I am releasing the soundtrack that is constantly playing in my brain and sharing it with all of you. I don’t always blog about music; I don’t always blog about my son; I don’t always blog about life; but I do always blog about me.
Owl once said,”That the opposite of an introduction, my dear Pooh, is a contradiction.”
As the smartest dude in the Hundred Acre Wood, I am inclined to go with it.
This week’s Mix-Tape is evoked by the title: “Unlikely Lullabies”
Do with it as you will, I will do the same. Feel inclined? Join in the fun. Of course I would be honored and thrilled if you choose to write your own post. If you do; put the link in the comment and I will then copy it into this post. OF course I do not discriminate against those who do not have all the time in the world to write posts for my reading pleasure. I would be just as happy for you to simply tell me your thoughts on the topic in the comments, favorite songs? Great bedtime stories? For about 4 years I couldn’t sleep without Tangerine Dream playing. This is not about Tangerine Dream.
My partner in crime; Kristi from Finding Ninee sits next to me in the driver seat hosting her own version of Twisted Mix-Tape Tuesday. Stop by and see what she has to say after you’ve finished over here. And in the case that being prepared is something that floats your boat, next week’s mood will be “I want to break up with you, but I want to do it nicely.”
Unlikely Lullabies
Someday when I am teaching my boy about alliteration, that song will be my only text. (Helplessly Hoping by CS&N)
This list was tough for me, not because I couldn’t think of any songs, but because I could think of so many. I gotta say all of these had some awesome live versions, so if you are so inclined, hop on the tube and look for the live versions of CS&N, Jackson Browne, and a younger James Taylor, you won’t be disappointed.
Helplessly Hoping – Crosby, Stills & Nash: Greatest Hits
St. Judy’s Comet – There Goes Rhymin’ Simon
How’s the World Treating You – Livin’, Lovin’, Losin’ – Songs of the Louvin Brothers
Rock Me On the Water – The Very Best of Jackson Browne
Sweet Baby James – James Taylor: Greatest Hits, Vol. 1
Thanks for listening!
Thanks to The Wakefield Doc for joining us again, with his ever so unsettling approach, if you never want to sleep again, click here.
I would be totally lying if I didn’t say that having my most favorite Jehovah’s Waitress play her mix-tape didn’t totally thrill me. Click here to see her picks, and to check out a most musically inspiring blog. Mod Mom Beyond IndieDom
Underwater Sunlight – Tangerine Dream
Psych!
Um, WHY hasn’t MmBop been featured yet? It goes with EVERY Tuesday list. Okay, it doesn’t, but dammit, I can make it go with every Tuesday list. 🙂
Girl get on your list!!!!!
So MmBop next week, right? 😉
mmmkkkay. Actually, I have the perfect list for it. But I think it might be a warm weather list. I’m penciling it in right now!
Dear Jen-
Unlikely Lullabies? Don’t mind if I do…
I used a highly complex formula to determine these. HA HA. Not.
Nothing Else Matters-Metallica (The Black Album)
Only You Can Love Me This Way-Keith Urban (Defying Gravity)
Here Is No Why-Smashing Pumpkins (Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness)
*Us and Them-Pink Floyd (Dark Side of the Moon)
I’ll Be There-Escape Club (Dollars and Sex)
*Most Pink Floyd songs could be a lullaby… think about it…
I never actually played these as lullabies, but I CAN recommend some really awesome lullaby music that won’t make you want to jam a pencil into your eardrum after listening to them 3,000 times.
Sincerely, a preschool teacher who about lost her mind listening to the crap they try to pass off as children’s music these days, so I found my own non annoying crap to play
Metallica as a lullaby, classic! I’m thinking “Here is no Why” would probably wake my son up….Agreed about Pink Floyd. I had almost completely forgotten about The Escape Club, that song seems sad. You are Sadder aren’t you? 😉 I am so happy you shared your list! Believe it or not I do play mine as lullabies, plus 30 or more songs to my boy. The other day I realized that he had subconsciously learned all of the words to the songs I play while he is sleeping. How’s that for creepy????
Sadder…but Wiser… hopefully more wise than sad. 😉 That’s not creepy at all-your mind works in mysterious ways when you sleep you know!
Love the Pooh reference. And Sadder – HUGE METALLICA FAN HERE. Oh and Jen, I’m ready – link me up, baby. ;D
PS I love love love love Helplessly Hoping. Love.
Your story….weep….I also cannot stand that line from Puff! And now that the boy is old enough to sing it! eek!
Although I love all your selections, there is no way I could possibly remember the words to all of them. Instead, I sang Beatles tunes, because those words are indelibly imprinted upon my brain. Okay, well, that and Duran Duran, which can be comforting when sung slowly.
Who said you need to remember the words? It’s called an IPOD. Just hit repeat, rock and you’re golden.
That would require multitasking on my part. And remembering to take the iPod with me.

How early am I??!
Sorry, the title does not *quite* make sense….but I’m early!!!
like the songs, I bet I am not the only one with Metallica…. but (given how early I am) I am willing to bet that no one has our little friends at Avenge…lol
Oh yeah!! the link!

(did I mention how early I was?)
uhm…can you say nightmares FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE??????
But I totally appreciate the earliness, so there’s that. Just promise me you will never play those songs for a child, with the exception of The Beatles of course 🙂
Had fun doing this! It was hard to narrow it down. I’m going to enjoy this every week. Thanks for hosting it. Great idea!

So glad you’re playing along, I’m actually listening to your mix now…so sweet and melancholy.
My lullabies are usually me making up the words to songs, my husband- Pearl Jam, all the time. Luckily, he sings it just like Eddie- mumbling.
Yeah…my husband does the same thing. He used to do this version of Lights by Journey, totally changed the words, recently he asked Isaiah if he remembered that, Isaiah had no idea what he was talking about 🙂
LOVE YOU
I love the new page!
MWAH!
