Twisted MixTape 37 – Just Because I Haunt the Same Old Places

mixtape jenkehl 200

There is a fine line between loving someone and loving them too much.  There is a moment when we all most of us know that it is time to say goodbye, move on, pick up the pieces.

Some people just never figure that one out. Some people can’t.

Some people write songs about it. They write songs about how they just can’t let go. They write songs about being addicted to that lost love or the one you never really had.

Those songs can be funny, sweet or just downright scary. I got kind of scared just reading the lyrics and actually choose to pass on some songs once I really read between the lines. Here’s what’s left.

I Wish You’d Come Back to Me

She Thinks I Still Care by James Taylor – This one is on my top 10 favorite songs. It was originally recorded by Connie Francis in 1948 as He Thinks I Still Care, George Jones (I love that man) turned it around and it got picked up all over the place. JT’s version is the one I love to sing, I love the sweet innocence. He doesn’t really realize what he’s doing as he accidentally dials her number, or “haunts the same old places where the memory of her lingers everywhere…”

To Turn You On by Roxy Music – This is one of the most beautiful Roxy Music songs ever. Bryan Ferry’s voice is amazing, truly. (FYI I’ve been dying for a chance to use this song). This is a subtle one. The poor guy is just begging her to call him, to tell him how much she really needs him. He’s just waiting. Waiting for her. He will do anything she wants, if she would just ask.

How Much I Feel by Ambrosia – This is another really beautiful song. Love to sing it…. It’s a sing out loud in the car song for sure. And you know, the lyrics are all really innocent. They break-up because she thinks he’s been cheating and he says basically I love you so much that I will leave you if that’s what you want….but then……
How’s your life been goin’ on
I’ve got a wife now years we’ve been goin’ strong
Oh no there’s just something that I’ve got to say
Sometimes when we make love I still can see your face (HELLO! PEOPLE!)
Just try to recall when we were as one

My Sharona by The Knack – I’m sorry the lyrics of this song are just wrong.

Keep on Lovin You  by REO Speedwagon – And of course here’s REO with the no duh. The video is PRICELESS.

As I mentioned last week, each week through January, I am going to showcase a blogger who is a friend to Twisted MixTape by doing their best to stop by all the mixes and say hello.

This week our featured blogger is I Dream of White Rooms

Be a pal and follow her on twitter at @DreamWhiteRooms and check out her blog I Dream of White Rooms if you haven’t already!

Thank you for listening! Now share your MixTape with all of us. The best part of this party is we get to hear so much music that may be new, may be forgotten or may be just what you wanted to hear right now.

These are the rules. Five songs (do your best to stick to it, I listen to every mix). Stick to the theme (as best you can). Check out the other players (everyone wants to share their tunes with you). Create a mix, not a “hey look at all the cool songs I know” we’re not snobs, if you were our best bud and you were gonna make us a tape, what would it be? And share this party so more people will play next week!

Do me a favor, if you’re a veteran, try and visit at least one person you’ve never visited before.

  1. Been working nonstop all day, but had a few songs in mind for this and of course time just got away from me once again this week. The number one song that came to mind to me from when I was a teen for this theme was “Cryin” by Aerosmith. Seriously I will never forget how obsessed Alecia Silverstone was in that video and still loved that song though. Thanks for bringing me back again tonight and seriously hoping to try better to linkup in the new year (hopefully can find more time in the day now!!) 🙂

  2. I Dream of White Rooms is a great blog hopper, in my opinion. Yay for highlighting her!

I read this prompt yesterday and I immediately thought of that stalker Police song. I think a lot of pop songs fall into this category. In their attempt to convey love, they go to far (cause a lot of pop songs are way dramatic) and end up sounding obsessed. My favorite Color Me Badd song comes to mind. I want to bathe with you in the ocean til the stars fall down on me (or something like that). Weird.

AND? Those lyrics? Was the person who wrote the song married at the time? Can you imagine what his wife said when she heard that song? Swift kick to the balls. Seriously.

  3. I love this mix. First off – I think Connie Francis is right up there with Roxette for singers this hop needs more of! But the James Taylor version is good too. Also enjoyed My Sharona – just don’t think about it deeply. But really – I liked them ALL this week.

As for featuring I Dream of White Rooms – well earned and good choice! So very welcoming every week to all of us!

  4. I am not well-versed in music (unless it is pop from any year that I’ve been alive), so I LOVE these Tuesdays. I learn so much and find songs that I never would have known existed! I’m going to have to show them to my hubs–he is a lover of all music, and I’m sure he’d love your hops! Miss you, skankster. Damn these jobs that don’t give me as much time to blog hop!!

  5. Every time I hear My Sharona I think of how I used to babysit for this kid in high school who was about 5 or 6 and that was his favorite song… He’d put it on the stereo and play air guitar and jump off the couch. It was then when I actually paid attention to the lyrics and wondered to myself, “Should I really be letting him listen to this?”

  11. Thanks so much for the featured spot this week Jen! I really love checking out everyone’s posts each week and seeing where everyone’s minds went for each theme. Christmas (and another cold) kicked my butt this week and I didn’t get a post out, but I’ll be stopping by everyone’s blogs in the next couple days to comment.

  12. I love hearing George Jones sing “She Thinks I Still Care.” Ricky Van Shelton also covered the song and I love his version. He does a lot of the ‘can’t get over you’ songs and his voice was made for them. As many times as I’ve heard “My Sharona” I never really payed attention to the words or meaning. Creepy, stalky, good tune. I loved this theme. 🙂

  14. My Sharona? I’ve sung that song for years, now I’m going to have to go back and figure out what it really says, I was surprised to see it, very curious. Off to check out a bunch of the other links, better late than never! Love seeing what everyone chooses!
