Twisted Mix Tape – A Cover Songs Playlist

mixtape jenkehl 200

Well this is one of my favorite playlists ever. The cover songs playlist. Thank you Kerri from Undiagnosed But Okay, you made my week!

I am a huge fan of Cover Songs, so much so that this is not the first time this has been a theme for our twisted mixtape. Can you believe that Mix Tape is almost a year old! Can you believe it? This week is 48 (but it’s actually 49 since we skipped a week)! So I figured it was okay to recycle my favorite topic; on May 13, 2013, the theme for Twisted Tuesday MixTape #7 was Cover songs. It’s been 42 weeks. I’m ready to revisit! Click on over to last May’s mix if you want to see my first 5 favorite cover songs. And because I know you were dying to know, there was a cover of a Carpenters song and the Carpenters doing a cover song. I am that good.

A Cover Songs Playlist, Vol.2

Guitar Man – Cake (if you’ve been following me you know Cake is in my top 10 faves, this is just one more reason why)

Hard to Handle – The Black Crowes Here’s a song that has been covered by soooo many bands, originally written and recorded by Otis Redding. I could have picked any of them and been happy, but I remember when this version came out, and there was something about it. It was just right.

Little Wing – Stevie Ray Vaughn This song has a very special meaning to me. My older brother worked at a record store as I was growing up, Stevie Ray albums were readily accessible in my house. He has been a part of my life for over 30 years. I was at Stevie Ray’s last concert. Alpine Valley was a 40 minute drive from my house. It was where I first saw the Grateful Dead, it was there that I saw The Grateful Dead’s last concert with Brent Mydland. You see we were already reeling (as a Family of Deadheads) from Brent’s death which had occurred right after the last set of shows at Alpine Valley that July. Seeing Stevie Ray in August almost exactly one month later was a wonderful convergence of those of us who lived close enough to Alpine Valley to take a break in our Dead touring schedule to see this amazing guitar player and feel better about life.

Stevie Ray Vaughn’s helicopter crashed as it left Alpine Valley that fateful night. We all remember hearing an explosion. But didn’t know what we heard until the next day. As a 20-year-old, tragic didn’t even begin to define the loss of two musicians who were already such an inspiring part of my life, and who were molding the music lover I would be.

Although I always felt awed by Jimi Hendrix, the way Stevie Ray played Little Wing spoke to me even more. I always felt it was my song.

Sorry for all the messy salt. Winter in Chicago.

Crazy Love – Bryan Ferry I have a Bryan Ferry thing too…. but that’s a story for another day. Or is it. I will say I am amazed by how few people know this version, that everyone knows as one of Van Morisson’s most popular songs.

Let’s go from Crazy to Strange and end on another obscure 80’s note:

Love is Strange – Everything But the Girl I loved this band in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Thank you to Trisha, from At Least We Made it This Far, for reminding me of this song last week. If it wasn’t for you, your even more obscure 80’s cover would have been Frente! doing Bizarre Love Triangle.

I hope you’re as excited about this topic as I am!

These are the rules. Five songs (do your best to stick to it, I really do listen to every mix and I don’t want you to wait). Stick to the theme (as best you can). Try and check out at least two of the other players or more! (everyone wants to share their tunes with you). Here’s my new idea. Why don’t you at least listen to the person before you, and the person after you. That way our last to join isn’t the last one out??

Create a mix, not a “hey look at all the cool songs I know” we’re not snobs, if you were our best bud and you were gonna make us a tape, what would it be? And share this party so more people will play next week!

Do me a favor, if you’re a veteran, try to visit at least one person you’ve never visited before.

Now push play!

March 18 – Forbidden Love (you choose why it’s forbidden!)
March 25 – Songs that you always loved, but they blew you away when you heard them live! (thanks Kerri from Undiagnosed But Okay)
April 1 –  In honor of April Fool’s (also because it’s been 6 weeks) YOUR CHOICE! What do you want to spin for us?
April 8 – These Lyrics Are Genius! (Thank you to Miss Cyn K!)
April 15 – Missing You

We have also created a Facebook group for MixTape, please join us!

And just incase you didn’t think I was schizophrenic enough. I have made the decision to merge Raised on the Radio with My Skewed View. Bringing it back to the place it started.

Running so many blogs has been spreading myself too thin. I would like to be able to share all of the wonderful musical memories people have with all of my followers. So please, share your thoughts and memories with me. And from this point on, Raised on the Radio will be live here, on Mondays! Our first post was our own Kirsten from The Kir Corner with her memories of Harden My Heart, it’s a quick fun read, check it out!

  2. Yay to almost celebrating a year here with Twisted Mix Tape and love your cover songs, because I yet again am finding some new songs that I never knew existed certain bands singing them. Great job 🙂

    • Yay to new songs! And I know! I never did a blogiversary thing… but a year of mixtapes seems pretty special 🙂

  3. I’m having complete fits that as someone that loves covers and loves Cake, I’ve never heard that Cake cover of Guitar Man before. I loved doing this week’s post and looking forward to finding some more new-to-me covers.

  4. I LOVE the last cover – a new discovery for me, so thanks so much. And I adore anything that harkens back to Dirty Dancing so yay!

And I will forever love the Black Crowes – enough that I’ve even seen them in concert (and I’m not a huge concert goer – how’s that for a confession on a music blog – so that says something 🙂

  6. I’m not familiar with any of these songs, honestly, but they are incredible! I can’t even pick one that I like best, but I will say that last song is perfection personified.

  7. Loved your covers! I never heard that “Guitar Man” cover before–I’ve really been getting to like Cake since following these hops. My favorite “Little Wing” has always been the Derek and the Dominos one, but I like the others too. It was fun to hear the “Crazy Love” cover, but I love the original way too much!

  8. Great songs! I think you’re turning me into a Cake fan (my teenager will never get over it!). 🙂

  9. If you’re looking for good cover songs, check out my spotify playlist. Spent alot of time looking for newish cover songs.
