This mix takes me back to my very first mixtape post, I had no idea what would happen, I had three people play, but I did it for the love of it. Last week was a record breaker for me, with 45 mixes linked up! You guys rock! Literally. I want you to all know how much I appreciate you playing along, and how much fun it is to hear all of your mixes.
This week’s MixTape Theme is Cheating Songs.
It brings me back to a time when I realized that John Cusack and I were of the same mind. OK not really. Cause I don’t really know him, but today I found out that I am 2 degrees of REAL separation from him! One of my favorite librarians (cause we hang out at the library a lot) was friends with him in High School! Her best friend went to prom with him! Sorry. I am a little star struck, and like I said, I can’t help but think that we’d be buds if we met. Cause I really believe we think about music the same way. And this week’s theme “Cheating Songs” well come on. Maybe he’s not the king of Cheated Hearts, but he certainly is the king of Broken ones. At least in the movies. And just incase you needed further proof of our kismetedness see that stereo receiver in the picture down there? The silver one? I have that. It’s the receiver I grew up with, and inherited to keep forever. Yup. We’re the same.
I’m gonna start you off with a bang, which technically is almost a rule breaker for a mixtape. Unless, somehow, I can find away to at least equal the meaningfulness of this first song before this mix is over. By far, the most underrated James Brown song EVER, he can actually sing about his heart being broken, AND make you want to dance. This is a cover, but it is its own unique version. Best line “Your cheating heart, will tell on you.”
Your Cheatin’ Heart by James Brown
Now James Brown is smooth, but Billy Paul. Man does he do smooth. How he manages to sing a song about cheating and wind up sounding like the good guy? Magic, that’s how.
Me and Mrs Jones by Billy Paul
And then there’s these guys. Yup These Guys. They could sing about anything and we’d love it. And here’s a little bit of trivia you may not know. Cecilia was written because a bunch of friends and Paul’s brother were hanging out and partying and basically got a groove going by playing rhythm on their thighs and a piano bench, and just banging whatever they wanted – cause they were musicians, and they were hanging out, and that’s what they do, they jam. They also recorded it. And when they listened to it later, they were like “Wow! This is awesome, let’s loop it and make it the rhythm for a song.” And so Cecilia was born. The lyrics were “just for fun” and the cheating Cecilia? Well, she’s the Patron Saint of Music. And now it all makes sense, no?
And now it is unpossible for me not to take this opportunity to twist my own mixtape. Again.
Stranger in the House by Elvis Costello. Listen carefully my friends. This is a song about a wife cheating on her husband. But who is she cheating with?
There’s a stranger in the house no one will ever see
Everybody says he looks like me.
This version is Elvis Costello and George Jones – Apparently they are each other’s biggest fans.
Because each mixtape should either end on a decisive note, or a cheesy note, I give you both. Ain’t no mistaking what this song is about.
Take it on the Run by REO Speedwagon!
Thank you for listening, now share your MixTape with all of us. The best part of this party is we get to hear so much music that may be new, may be forgotten or may be just what you wanted to hear right now.
These are the rules. Five songs (do your best to stick to it, I listen to every mix). Stick to the theme (as best you can). Check out the other players (everyone wants to share their tunes with you). Create a mix, not a “hey look at all the cool songs I know” we’re not snobs, if you were our best bud and you were gonna make us a tape, what would it be? And share this party so more people will play next week!
Do me a favor, if you’re a veteran, try and visit at least one person you’ve never visited before.
And now, The List of all Lists
November 26 – I know it’s gonna be hard, with Thanksgiving and all, but this is a really fun topic suggested by my favorite mixer-uper, literally, she’s always mixing up the topic. Kerri from Undiagnosed but Okay. She said, how about a “this song could’ve sent me to jail?” I was intrigued, but needed more. Hmmm let’s see the Doors come on baby get higher 🙂 Or Carrie Underwood doing a little grand larceny beating up her boyfriends truck? Blondie gets arrested after seeing Aliens in Rapture Or even to be funnier: Joe Cocker you can leave your hat on, so if I left just my hat on I would be arrested for indecent exposure. Trust me it wouldn’t be pretty! – Now I get it!
December 3 – It is officially OK to be listening to Christmas Music now! Bring it on! Maybe we’ll find some new favorite Christmas tunes for our holiday playlists!
December 10 – I don’t just love you, I’m addicted to you!
