Twisted MixTape 18

Crap. How did I get to be 30 already? It seems like only last Tuesday it was 1999 and I was 29. Well…now that I’m all growed up, I guess I’ve got to listen to grown-up music. Ahhh…easy listening. Or, wait!!! Frank Sinatra, yup, Frank, Deano those dudes, they were the sh*t.

Now what to buy, what to buy? Well, it’s not like I was there when this stuff was happening the first time around, so I’m gonna take some other music director dudes word for it and buy an anthology. And you know what, I’m going to play the heck out of that thing until I know every freakin word by heart, and can sing it just like they do. That’s what I’m gonna do.

That’s what I did. Like the 90’s, the 00’s (how the heck do you say that anyway? Seriously. Someone help me out.) were a kind of musical void for me. I admit it I am popcist (for those of you not living in my head that would be a cross between pop music and racist). I also admit that I love Jazz which really made Frank and Dean and all of their brethren a no-brainer for me, as well as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Etta James and the like. I also explored 50’s music across the board and found an amazingly varied genre. Buuutttt…..that’s a story for another day.

This is TWISTED MIXTAPE TUESDAY and I am your Music Director, Jen Kehl. (Think the music equivalent of Julie from the Love Boat only brown hair, wearing t-shirts and jeans, and definitely not cheerful 24/7, oh yeah and not on a boat) For this week’s MixTape we will be playing:

Music From The ZeroZero’s

Now keep in mind. Next week’s topic will cover music from the 10’s (?’s what the heck? are we going to call them the 10’s? Really?) at that time you can still include music from the Zilches. But for this week STAY OUT OF 2010 and beyond ond ond ond…… Anything prior to this “decade that will remain nameless” is fair game. If you want to create a theme within a theme, have at it! If you want to pretend you’re you and this is the 21st Century and you are making a mixtape for some person, dog or vegetable, then play on my friend!

Chillaxing With My Hero Zero

Yoshimi Battles Pink Robots -Flaming Lips (2002)   Psych! This one is actually from the oh oh’s ha! For those of you not acquainted with the brilliance that is Wayne Coyne and the Flaming Lips. Enjoy and seek out further brilliance by googling this underground icon.

Happy People – R. Kelly (2004) Just chill out and groove…

When the Morning Comes – Hall and Oates (1973) After the 80’s were over and I regained some of my sensibilities, I began to explore some of the lesser known songs of some extremely famous musical icons. This song so deserves the listen. Also, possibly one of my favorite names for an album “Abandoned Luncheonette.” p.s. I cannot promise you I won’t use this song in the future on another mixtape because it’s lyrics lend itself SO WELL.

99 – Toto (1979) Ditto on the previous comment. Just love this song, didn’t even know it existed until the “nada’s.” Of course my husband knew – he was old in 1979 already, I was only 9. So don’t blame me. Just be happy you get to hear it now.

Dude, I have wanted to include my beloved Jimi in a list for SO LONG, this song was in heavy rotation for me in that decade that confounds me.

Long Hot Summer Night – Jimi Hendrix (1968) Dude, I have wanted to include my beloved Jimi in a list for SO LONG, this song was in heavy rotation for me in that decade that confounds me.

Now for the fun part. The rules of Twisted MixTape are as such: Try and create a 5 song mix based on this week’s theme. As we move through the decades the assumption is you know about the music in the past, but not what is to come. Create your own post and link it up, or put your mix in the comments. If you’re going to link-up there must be a song – relating to the theme – in your post. And really, we love songs in the comments! So bring it!
Share this all over the place, the more the merrier. And go visit my lovely cohort, without whom I would have never had the guts to make this happen – Kristi at Finding Ninee. She’s always got a song, a funny story and some silly Drawrings. Mostly, just have fun, there’ s no pressure here.

Here is The List of all Lists:

Aug 6 – The 00′s part 2 up to and including 2013
Aug 13 – Duets ( this can be duets or duos like Hall & Oats or Loggins & Messina you decide)
Aug 20 – No Strings Attached (I know none of us feel this way – wink wink.  But there are a lot of great songs about having a relationship/one night stand with no strings attached)
August 27 – You know what? I suck/ You suck. Get your venom out here, or maybe that ballad that basically says ‘you suck’”, or play it this way: you’re the one who did wrong and you know it. This is your apology/acknowledgement for being an ass. Or a mix of the two. You decide.
September 3 – “BEST OF” pick a band, any band, and put together a “Best of” playlist. Easy peasy for the holiday weekend.

  1. sigh

well you had The Flaming Lips, good song. I can’t believe you don’t like The White Stripes or any of Jack White’s other bands.

hmmm, I may have to change mine.

    • Don’t go changing….to try and please me…..because I’m just the music director of my own mind….oooooooooooo

  2. The 00’s were a musical void for me too, unless it involved a purple dinosaur or four grown men dancing with an octopus (the Wiggles – were they still around when Isaiah was a toddler?). Fortunately I emerged from my haze around 2006 and re-entered the adult world of music. Glad to link up again, Jen!

  3. I have to be honest and in the early part of the new millennium, I was still listening to songs from the previous decade and not as into the current music. Not sure why, but just was. So if I had to say any decade didn’t have as much distinct music that I liked this would be it. Just saying!!

    • Janine – Clearly it wasn’t the hottest one for me either. Wondering what that means for the big picture!

  4. I like to go old-school and call the previous decade “the aughts.” Makes me sound like my grandpa or some history channel documentary narrator. And my students are shocked that that’s actually a word, as in, “My daughter was born in aught six.”
And the aughts were a bit of a lost decade for me musically, too… starting teaching, starting parenthood kinda kept me away from music. But I could sing the Dora theme song …

    • Oh Sarah, thank you for more fodder for next week! I really resisted getting into kids music. I don’t know if that was good or bad. Although The Higgly Town Heroes theme song was by They Might Be Giants, so there’s that 🙂

  5. OK, well, you dipped back into a few other decades but at least you got Wayne in there. 🙂 I went to a show for this album or the one after that in the mid-00’s and I think at the show was when I realized I was getting “too old for this shit.” But it was a really really awesome performance.

  7. Oh, this is a goodie. Into my 30s and really getting a little wild. Spent way too much time in bars. Or was that the 90s? Wait, was it the whole time?? I think my list will be interesting. Now I just have to write it.

  8. I am biased, but ‘2 candy cane windows’? what kind of mind comes up with that and plays guitar in a way that alters generations of musicians?

I started to stutter…. (lol damn! trying to write this Comment while listening to the song).

all the songs on your list are good, but Hendrix (with the exception of Dolly Dagger) there is nothing that isn’t amazing.

  10. So glad to see I wasn’t the only one who “fell back” this week! This is the decade where I took on my dad’s stole of griping about “what the kids are listening to…” the only difference between he and I is that I’m actually right! =)

    • Hey Tracy, Did I ever mention I love the Flaming Lips? Because I thought I heard somewhere that you love the Flaming Lips.

  11. Haha to you being like Julie but not cheerful 24/7 and not on a boat. Awesome. Don’t hate me but I never got into Toto and I’m not sure why…I love the rest of your list though and agree with Tracy that Flaming Lips are awesome.

  12. This post cracked me up. Starting with you being worried that you were 30. Man, how I wish to be 30. I was just a tad bit older that year…and now. 😉 And, YES, what do you call the 00’s?? I would like to know. I agree with you about music from this period. In fact, honestly, I don’t really even remember what came out then. It was mainly a bunch of little girls singing, right? Am I remembering correctly?

    • Rachel Man, I don’t know… there was a lot of whining, and sadness and darkness. Then there were a lot of bubblegum pop type girls. And a lot of gangsta rap.

  13. I enjoyed your post this Tuesday. I liked R Kelley’s music until my Dad visited me and had me play his greatest hits on my stereo. Let me tell you, there IS something wrong with listening to Bump and Grind with your Dad. It is one of those moments that just ruins something for life…anyway…
I am with you on the zero decade! I will enjoy referring to the twenties next decade. I will be doing the shimmy for sure! Thank you for hosting!

  14. I agree with Sarah – the AUGHTS. Or the NAUGHTIES. 🙂

Speaking of naughty, I’m cheating because I have 14 songs and I can’t pick. So I’m doing 7 this week and 7 next week. Here ya go – the early naughties picks:
    Wonderful — India.Arie (2001)
Brand New Colony — The Postal Service (2003)
The New Year — Death Cab for Cutie (2003)
Stumbling Through the Dark — The Jayhawks (2003)
Hollaback Girl — Gwen Stefani (2004)
Banana Pancakes — Jack Johnson (2005)
Gold Digger — Kanye West (2005)

  15. Oh the 00’s… my heyday! (Maybe? TBD)

This decade was high school and college for me… how am I supposed to narrow it down? Uh… prob not happening. But a few off the top of my head:

Behind These hazel Eyes- Kelly Clarkson (don’t judge, I totes loved her)
Peaches & Cream- 112 (R&B baby, I love this cause I remember ditching class junior year in my 1992 acura integer blasting this song!)
    umm…
Bombs Over Baghdad (B.O.B.)- Outkast ( this just popped in my head and I need to listen to this now!!!!)
99 Problems- Jay Z (apparently this era brings out the rap lover in me?)
Ignition (and the remix)- R Kelly (Senior trip, sang this on the bus. Good memory)
Crazy- Gnarles barkley (Was prob stuck in my head the whole decade)
