Crap. How did I get to be 30 already? It seems like only last Tuesday it was 1999 and I was 29. Well…now that I’m all growed up, I guess I’ve got to listen to grown-up music. Ahhh…easy listening. Or, wait!!! Frank Sinatra, yup, Frank, Deano those dudes, they were the sh*t.
Now what to buy, what to buy? Well, it’s not like I was there when this stuff was happening the first time around, so I’m gonna take some other music director dudes word for it and buy an anthology. And you know what, I’m going to play the heck out of that thing until I know every freakin word by heart, and can sing it just like they do. That’s what I’m gonna do.
That’s what I did. Like the 90’s, the 00’s (how the heck do you say that anyway? Seriously. Someone help me out.) were a kind of musical void for me. I admit it I am popcist (for those of you not living in my head that would be a cross between pop music and racist). I also admit that I love Jazz which really made Frank and Dean and all of their brethren a no-brainer for me, as well as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Etta James and the like. I also explored 50’s music across the board and found an amazingly varied genre. Buuutttt…..that’s a story for another day.
This is TWISTED MIXTAPE TUESDAY and I am your Music Director, Jen Kehl. (Think the music equivalent of Julie from the Love Boat only brown hair, wearing t-shirts and jeans, and definitely not cheerful 24/7, oh yeah and not on a boat) For this week’s MixTape we will be playing:

When the Morning Comes – Hall and Oates (1973) After the 80’s were over and I regained some of my sensibilities, I began to explore some of the lesser known songs of some extremely famous musical icons. This song so deserves the listen. Also, possibly one of my favorite names for an album “Abandoned Luncheonette.” p.s. I cannot promise you I won’t use this song in the future on another mixtape because it’s lyrics lend itself SO WELL.
99 – Toto (1979) Ditto on the previous comment. Just love this song, didn’t even know it existed until the “nada’s.” Of course my husband knew – he was old in 1979 already, I was only 9. So don’t blame me. Just be happy you get to hear it now.

The 00’s were a musical void for me too, unless it involved a purple dinosaur or four grown men dancing with an octopus (the Wiggles – were they still around when Isaiah was a toddler?). Fortunately I emerged from my haze around 2006 and re-entered the adult world of music. Glad to link up again, Jen!

I have to be honest and in the early part of the new millennium, I was still listening to songs from the previous decade and not as into the current music. Not sure why, but just was. So if I had to say any decade didn’t have as much distinct music that I liked this would be it. Just saying!!

I like to go old-school and call the previous decade “the aughts.” Makes me sound like my grandpa or some history channel documentary narrator. And my students are shocked that that’s actually a word, as in, “My daughter was born in aught six.”
And the aughts were a bit of a lost decade for me musically, too… starting teaching, starting parenthood kinda kept me away from music. But I could sing the Dora theme song …
Oh Sarah, thank you for more fodder for next week! I really resisted getting into kids music. I don’t know if that was good or bad. Although The Higgly Town Heroes theme song was by They Might Be Giants, so there’s that 🙂
OK, well, you dipped back into a few other decades but at least you got Wayne in there. 🙂 I went to a show for this album or the one after that in the mid-00’s and I think at the show was when I realized I was getting “too old for this shit.” But it was a really really awesome performance.

I am biased, but ‘2 candy cane windows’? what kind of mind comes up with that and plays guitar in a way that alters generations of musicians?

all the songs on your list are good, but Hendrix (with the exception of Dolly Dagger) there is nothing that isn’t amazing.

This post cracked me up. Starting with you being worried that you were 30. Man, how I wish to be 30. I was just a tad bit older that year…and now. 😉 And, YES, what do you call the 00’s?? I would like to know. I agree with you about music from this period. In fact, honestly, I don’t really even remember what came out then. It was mainly a bunch of little girls singing, right? Am I remembering correctly?
Rachel Man, I don’t know… there was a lot of whining, and sadness and darkness. Then there were a lot of bubblegum pop type girls. And a lot of gangsta rap.
I enjoyed your post this Tuesday. I liked R Kelley’s music until my Dad visited me and had me play his greatest hits on my stereo. Let me tell you, there IS something wrong with listening to Bump and Grind with your Dad. It is one of those moments that just ruins something for life…anyway…
