This week’s topic for Twisted MixTape is Dealer’s Choice! If you ever wanted to jump on the bandwagon this would be the time! You choose your topic, but let’s not get crazy folks. I listen to every one of your mixes, so keep it as close to 5 as possible!
Once upon a time I wanted to be a truck driver. Desperately. I used to tell anyone who asked this messy-haired brown corduroy wearing tom-boy what she wanted to be when she grew up “A truck driver. Or a cowboy.” Which would be met with blank stares.
Being part of the generation that was raised on B.J. and the Bear and Smokey and the Bandit, it was probably no wonder that being a truck driver seemed so romantic. I mean really, my choice is riding in a Kenworth with a hottie named Billie Joe, or Burt Reynolds playing Bandit? Uhm, really a no brainer.
Add in the fact that I was a true fan of road trips. And loved me a little 70’s country music. Well, that was about all it took.
Somehow, although I never stopped wanting to be a truck driver, it never came to be. And then….one day…. I married one. What?! It’s a super long story. I met my husband after he decided to retire from hauling an 18 wheeler cross-country for over 15 years. And yes, back in the day, you could make a pretty penny doing that.
So, we got married, had a kid 5 years later, and then swiftly began indoctrinating that child.
When I realized that my child had a love of the same corny 70’s truck driver country music I did, well there was no stopping me.
This could have been a variety show, but the truth is – Jerry Reed has my heart. There is no one like Jerry Reed. He was such an incredible song-writer and musician that Elvis had him tracked down in the middle of a fishing trip because he wanted to cover Reed’s song Guitar Man, but no one could play it right. A few years later he teamed up with Chet Atkins, guitar legend, for a few records (Atkins was also his main producer) and Atkins bestowed on him the title of Certified Guitar Player a moniker that Chet Atkins created to describe an artist who personified the ultimate in performance skill and musical quality. He only bestowed that title on four guitar players in his lifetime. Also he was on Scooby Doo, so there’s that. I feel a Raised on the Radio post coming on here.
Sadly, I am not chosing my songs based on Jerry Reed’s gifted guitar playing, although it surely is present. I just can’t get enough of that guys lyrics!

November 26 – I know it’s gonna be hard, with Thanksgiving and all, but this is a really fun topic suggested by my favorite mixer-uper, literally, she’s always mixing up the topic. Kerri from Undiagnosed but Okay. She said, how about a “this song could’ve sent me to jail?” I was intrigued, but needed more. Hmmm let’s see the Doors come on baby get higher 🙂 Or Carrie Underwood doing a little grand larceny beating up her boyfriends truck? Blondie gets arrested after seeing Aliens in Rapture Or even to be funnier: Joe Cocker you can leave your hat on, so if I left just my hat on I would be arrested for indecent exposure. Trust me it wouldn’t be pretty! – Now I get it!
December 3 – It is officially OK to be listening to Christmas Music now! Bring it on! Maybe we’ll find some new favorite Christmas tunes for our holiday playlists!

My dad became so Smokey/trucking obsessed after seeing the movie, he went out and bought a CB…for our station wagon. I heard a lot of Jerry Reed, along with other “truck drivin’ songs” like Convoy and Teddy Bear.
My daughter is sleeping right now so I can’t listen to these songs- I honestly cannot figure out if I know any of them! I love that you married a truck driver after wanting to be one.

This is fun! I now confess I have not heard of Jerry Reed until this moment – but this was entertaining.

Did you ever watch the movie “Convoy”? Reading this made me check, and I found it streaming on Netflix. Now I want to watch it and see if it is as cool as I remember.
Oh yes! Convoy didn’t make the list ONLY because Jerry Reed didn’t sing it. But there is actually a great video on YouTube of the song that has a great synopsis of the movie.
What a Trip!!! One of a kind. I cannot tell you how many times I have said, when looking at someone, “He looks like an Alabama Wild Man.” Ha…

I get the tomboy concept. I wanted to be a football player when girls playing football was unheard of, so I settled for games on the school field and Smear the Queer (Oh how much trouble that name would cause now!!).
I enjoyed this walk down Jerry Reed lane.
That “Smokey and the Bandit” clip brought back so many memories! I had a big crush on Burt Reynolds (didn’t everyone?), and went through a CB lingo phase with everyone else. Watch out for the Kojak with a Kodak.
I thought I wanted to be a truck driver too! The only reason was:
1. I associated road trips with vacation.
2. They had an excuse to listen to music all day.
Yeah, now I know better and I hate driving. Though road trips are still fun as long as I don’t have to drive.

Funny about Jerry Reed, being guitar oriented and all, I recall watching TV and wondering if my parents understood what kind of monstrous talents would show up on the most ‘mainstream’ shows like the Glen Campbell Show. (John Hartford and Jerry Reed to name only a few…)
Incredible musicians. It was especially fun for me, to discover the other giants of guitar (outside of the Marshall-powered crowd that formed the center of my musical world).
Very cool list… and, once again, nice work on the bloghop. Every week you do that thing that gets people to stretch a bit, and the result is so worth it.

I was surprised that I knew so many of these songs, as I never watched any of those shows/movies. But I LOVE this list! Great music! Apparently, I’m a Jerry Reed fan and I didn’t know it. 😉 PS: I am still a tomboy. It’s all good!
When I was 18, right after I was a dumbass and quit college, I wanted to run away from home. Yep…dumbass. So I got the bright idea that I would become a truck driver so I could “run away” from home but still be gainfully employed. I even went as far as to pick up a truck driver’s manual at the DMV. Thankfully, I pulled my head (somewhat) out of my ass.
I’ve got pretty eclectic tastes when it comes to music, but I’d never heard ANY of these! My husband has, though, and we had a ball listening to them together. Thanks so much for the intro to Jerry!
I’ve never heard of this guy before…thanks for the lesson! (Though I do remember, just barely, being into BJ and the Bear as a little girl.) Your childrhood dream makes a lot of sense when you think of all that trucker culture that was going on! 🙂 Also, now I realize where the name of the show “Eastbound & Down” comes from!
