Does your sensory kid hate brushing his teeth? How about your typical kid? You can thank me later.

gund brush teeth bear

If this is your first time here, let me introduce myself. I may not be a Sensory Processing Disorder expert, but I play one on TV.

Actually, scratch that. I am an expert. I know more than every expert, pediatrician, and psychiatrist I’ve seen yet.

Why do I know more? Because I won’t take “I don’t know” or “I’m not sure” for an answer.  While doctors and therapists learn from books and internships, I have lived with my own personal test subject for 9 years.  I know what works, and what doesn’t work. And if you’re a doctor, I see right through you when you don’t know sensory processing disorder from OCD or Autism.

That being said, here’s something I didn’t know. I didn’t know that a stuffed bear would help my SPD kid brush his teeth.

This is not a promotional post, Gund has no idea I own this bear, let alone am writing about it. But this is something I had to do.

It’s hard enough to get a 9yo boy to brush his teeth. Throw in Sensory issues and it’s darn near impossible. Since the boy was two we have had the same argument about brushing teeth EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.

Enter best dentist in the world. His first visit ever was 3 months ago, you can think I’m a neglectful mom, but considering how difficult it was to get this kid to eat “real” food, I figured it was in everyone’s best interest to wait a while before someone stuck their hands in his mouth. And possibly lost a finger.

When we had the teeth brushing conversation she handed him a bear. A teeth brushing bear. He talked, and sang and was super excited about brushing his teeth.

In my mind I was like “Whatever, he’s 8, he’s going to think this is baby stuff” WRONG! When the bear was finished this kid begged for one. Well color me surprised, I ordered one on Amazon right there from my phone.

If you doubt the value of such a toy…..

You’re a good momma and you should be a doctor.
Can you diagnose this wart on my foot?

  • I hated brushing my teeth as a kid… I hated the taste of the toothpaste and the feel of the brush in my mouth. Still do… bleh! But that is great that the bear works! What a simple solution most people would never have thought of!ReplyCancel

What an awesome awesome idea! Tucker’s never been to the dentist, either. We finally got him to start brushing his teeth, but can’t use toothpaste (I think we’ve tried about 13 different kinds and now i figure at least he’s brushing a little bit). Thanks, Jen! Pinned!ReplyCancel
