Twisted Mix Tape 47 – A Guilty Pleasures Playlist – The Truth Comes Out

mixtape jenkehl 200

Hello Everyone! It’s so nice to see you again, I hope you like my new blog design, I did it all myself and I’m pretty proud of it! I also have a new blog button, the old one works still, but if you want to switch things up a bit, go ahead and grab it!

Speaking of being proud of something….

Or Not….

Every week our mix tape has a theme, and this week our theme is Guilty Pleasures: Songs or Bands you hate to admit you love, offered to us by Sarah The Sadder But Wiser Girl.

This mix is way too easy for me to make, I mean really, I have never hidden the fact that I love The Bee Gees, George Michael, The Carpenters, ABBA and basically every cheesy 70’s song out there.

So wait. Maybe this will be harder than I thought. If I’m not afraid to admit it, then…. well, I’ll dig a little deeper for you folks. You’re welcome.

A Guilty Pleasures Playlist

Gold – Britt Nicole It was actually a Facebook post that introduced me to this song. It has an amazing message, all girls should listen to it on repeat until they can’t stand it anymore but the message is ingrained in their brain.

You Belong With Me – Taylor Swift Because, she has an amazing voice and a gift for catchy tunes, and yes, there are more than one Taylor songs on my iPod. Also, I love this video.

What Makes You Beautiful – One Direction Thank you Just Dance 4 for this one. I know the dance by heart, and it’s always my first choice when we head to the basement for a dance party.

Even the Nights Are Better – Air Supply I’m sorry, but if you were a teenager in the 80’s I think you’d be lying if you said that a little Air Supply didn’t make you wax nostalgic. For me it’s in a good way, so they still have a place on my iPod.

Don’t Turn Around – Ace of Base Yes I have their Greatest Hits, yes I had to listen to all of them to decide which to put on the list. BTW my sister hates Ace of Base, there’s not a lot of things that annoy her, so this is that ace up my sleeve.

When I Get You Alone – Glee Cast. Guess what? If it wasn’t for Glee I probably wouldn’t know ANY pop songs at all. I didn’t even know this song was Robin Thicke until this year, but I’ve been listening to it for 3 years as part of my playlist of Glee’s Greatest Hits (my choice, not theirs). Also, since we are spilling the beans, I have downloaded more Glee songs than any other artist. (Of course I owned over 1000 CD’s pre-iPod that I uploaded). And this is an AMAZING version. Give it a listen, you won’t be sorry.

So now it’s your turn to spill the beans. Come on, don’t be shy! We’re all friends here, it’s like a sleepover party, we’re playing truth or dare, and you get truth.

These are the rules. Five songs (do your best to stick to it, I really do listen to every mix and I don’t want you to wait). Stick to the theme (as best you can). Try and check out at least two of the other players or more! (everyone wants to share their tunes with you).

Create a mix, not a “hey look at all the cool songs I know” we’re not snobs, if you were our best bud and you were gonna make us a tape, what would it be? And share this party so more people will play next week!

Do me a favor, if you’re a veteran, try to visit at least one person you’ve never visited before.

  1. Oh Ace of Base is totally a guilty pleasure here too and now you got me humming I saw the Sign! But seriously, I love the new blog design and button, too. It was the first thin I notices as soon as I came here tonight and totally looks amazing. You really did a great hob and love it! 🙂

  2. This was a hard one for me to narrow down- I had ten songs I wanted and Ace of Base was on there!

I love Ace of Base (no shame) and Glee and even One Direction. Haha, now the truth comes out.

This is a great list. I’m dancing in my seat with my headphones on.

  3. I never heard Gold before. It’s so sweet. I wish I heard it back in HS. I completely forgot about Ace of Base. I loved them for a minute in 7th grade. Glee was the only one that made me cringe. I just can’t stand that show & this is someone who grew up w/ Broadway. Good mix though 🙂

  4. AHA! We are both guilty of listening to Taylor Swift! I just counted and I own eight of them. I mean, my husband and son own eight of them, yeah, that’s the ticket. LOL-my husband loves Air Supply too!

  5. I love you more with every mixtape. I have 1D and Glee on mine too. And Air Supply? I wore out my Greatest Hits cassette tape. I’ve never heard of the song Gold, but what a great video! The song may make me a little nutty, but awesome message.

  6. Ohh so many good songs on this list. I love Ace Of Base, and even Taylor Swift, though I’m a bit choosy over her songs. That particular OD song is really the only one I like, and anything the Warblers sang I really liked too, even after Blaine joined New Direction.

Also, I love your new look! it’s pleasing to the eye and easy to navigate, and the color combo is catchy.

  8. These are so good! I am loving that Britt Nicole song and can’t wait for my daughter to get home so I can have her listen to it. That should be an anthem! I adore Taylor Swift and am not ashamed to admit that. That One Direction song is really the only one I know but it is very catchy. And Air Supply? Oh, the memories…

  9. I like “What Makes You Beautiful”… its another one of my guilty pleasures! I remember when I worked in an elementary school last year, the middle school band came and played for the kids, and that was one of the songs they played. Every single little kid in the gym was singing along at the top of their lungs! It was adorable.

  10. I liked the lyrics of “Gold” too. I teach 7th grade, and it’s rough out there for them sometimes. I liked that Taylor Swift video too — you hooked me and got me in a sweet, happy mood 🙂

  11. OMG, I have my own “Glee” Greatest Hits! Love Kurt’s version of “Defying Gravity”. I love your pick, too — didn’t know it was Robin Thicke until just now! Thanks!

  12. I almost included REO Speedwagon — “I Can’t Fight This Feeling” — pretty well interchangeable with your Air Supply selection.

  13. I hadn’t heard the Gold song before (which I love) – but other than that? I think guilty pleasure you and me should hang out and do drinks.

I love this side of you! As for Ace of Base – much love of them so yay! And I suddenly wonder if whenever you hear Lady Gaga singing Alejandro you also think she’s channeling Ace of Base, or if that’s really just me (maybe ABBA, but I truly think Alejandro is Ace of Base-y).

Also agree re: Glee and the fact that it’s opened me up to music I’d never have heard otherwise. Loved your choice there too. As a random thought, I’ve stopped watching regularly because I lost interest in the plot. I’m thinking maybe they should make some of them vampires. What do you think? I think that would hit pretty much everything I look for in television: teen drama; music; sci fci. Just a thought.

Sorry for the tangent – really – loved this theme and list!

  14. liked your list… but one question: the giant glasses that tell us that Taylor is a homely girl are the modern era’s version of Clark Kent wearing regular glasses as a disguise?
I need to get my time under-control, I think I forgot how much fun the TMTT are! nice bHop…yo

  16. I didnt make a mix this week, but mine would have been similar to yours! I love all the cheesy oldies but goodies and make no secret about it. It’s the newer pop songs that are my guilty pleasures. Taylor Swift is definitely at the top of my list. I feel like only 12 year old should like her, but her music is so catchy and sing-alongable.

  17. First – love the blog design! Spirograph!! I recently bought one, um, for the kids. And I could write a whole post about your choices here, but I won’t do that…suffice it to say I laughed and smiled the whole way through. And I didn’t know that was Robin Thicke either – I thought the only song of his I liked was Blurred Lines. I hope to play again next week! Have a great week.

  19. Confession… I have every single song on your list on my iTunes. I almost included One Direction and Taylor Swift (different songs, though).
The Piano Guys do a really awesome version of “What Makes You Beautiful.” I recommend checking it out… I liked it even more than the original.

  20. I LOVE the new design, and I also love this playlist! It’s no secret that my entire playlist is made up of cheesy-ass guilty pleasures. Sometimes I take it out when we have company just to make fun of myself. There will be groans all around, but sometimes there will also be head bopping and smiling, too. 🙂
